Luzern on first sight

GROSS.MAX. was invited by the City of Luzern to act as “Agent Provocateur” in the process of the reconfiguration of the Central Station area. The idea was to open the eyes for new spatial and programmatic opportunities to revitalise the Station Square. By analyzing the site and its historical development, a rationale emerges for what, where, and when to intervene. We believe that every landscape tells a story and that "reading the landscape" creates a project narrative. This idea can be summarized as "concept follows context." The beauty of Lucerne, and what makes it so special, is that city and landscape are intertwined.  Moreover, City and Landscape converge at the station. In our vision arriving at Luzern by train should be a magical experience; an unfolding panoramic view composed of city, lake and mountains. To achieve its potential the station square should once become a free open space devoid of clutter with activated edges and become an outdoor foyer overlooking the lake and mountain beyond. We developed a series of project scenarios such as Festival Square / Garden Square / Town Square and Waterfront Square. Arriving in Lucerne should once again evoke the feeling of falling in love at first sight.
