Kew in the Country
Wakehurst Place
Sussex, UK 2010 - 2012
A walk on the wild site
Wakehurst Place is Royal Botanic Garden’s ‘Kew in the country’ site in the Sussex weald, and home to their mainly woody, phyto-geographic collections set within a grade II* registered historic landscape. In June 2010, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBGK) in collaboration with the National Trust and co-funded by Natural England, commissioned GROSS. MAX landscape Architects to prepare a Landscape Conservation Management Plan for the estate at Wakehurst Place comprising of the historic gardens, parkland and outlying woodlands. The Conservation Management Plan outlines specific aims and policies required to sustain the significance of the site. In conjunction with the development of the Landscape Conservation Management Plan a Landscape Master Plan for Wakehurst Place has been prepared. The Landscape Master Plan provides an overall vision for Wakehurst Place with long term aims looking forward 30 years. This provides a long-term continuum in which effective policies can be developed. The Landscape Conservation Management Plan provides an operational document that focuses upon a ten-year period to plan effectively and prioritise a series of policies, which can be further developed into annual work plans.
