From Footpath to Flightpath
Heathrow Expansion Project
London, UK 2018 - 2020
A sequential process of remediation, mitigation and transformation
GROSS. MAX. Landscape Architects in collaboration with Grimshaw delivered a landscape vision to mitigate the impact of the Heathrow Expansion. The Landscape Vision was driven by the ambition of Heathrow to become one of the most sustainable hub airports in the world, to be a good neighbour and to become a great place to live, work and travel.
The landscape vision operates on various scales and timeframes, involving the landscape and communities surrounding the airport as well a regional landscape and green infrastructure strategy. To support the landscape vision and deliver transformative landscape proposals, we carefully studied the natural and cultural landscape. The strategy was supported by a three-dimensional Landscape Development Plan as an overlay to the emerging Masterplan and a Landscape Toolkit which could be further developed into specific area specific design guidelines and design parameters. The strategy promotes a sequential process of remediation, mitigation and transformation. The proposals advocated a robust approach to interdisciplinary and multi-functionality in design and implementation and promoted close collaboration with local communities.
In collaboration with Grimshaw we worked on proposals for a new Airport Terminal envisaged as ‘Third Space’.
