• Eelco Hooftman

    Director

    Eelco Hooftman (b.1960), co-founder of GROSS. MAX. Landscape Architects graduated from the University of Agriculture Wageningen, The Netherlands. Eelco integrates theory and practice of landscape architecture in an extensive output of (international) projects and award winning competitions. As part of his graduation Eelco worked on projects in the Sudan and United Arab Emirates including the redesign of Safa park in Dubai. After graduation Eelco worked on large scale strategic landscape structure plans in the Netherlands prior to his move to the United Kingdom in 1990. His strong affinity with the arts has resulted in a range of collaborations with artists and he has been given three Royal Society of the Arts “Art for Architecture” Awards. As Reader at the Edinburgh School of Art Eelco founded and directed the innovative post graduate programme Art / Space and Nature (2003-2008) in collaboration with artist Alan Johnston. Eelco Hooftman is recognised as an international speaker as well jury member of numerous international competitions including the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt and the new library for Berlin. As director of GROSS. MAX. Eelco’s key input is the conceptual approach and design development control of all key strategic projects with the office. Eelco Hooftman directed the Landscape Master Plan & World Heritage Conservation Management Plan for Royal Botanic Gardens Kew as well the winning design for the transformation of the 380 ha former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin in Berlin. Key urban transformation projects Eelco have been successful working on include Zorrozaure Bilbao, Greenwich Peninsular London, La Belvedrre de Garonna Bordeaux and lake shore Drive Toronto. Eelco Hoofman was between 2009-2018 visiting professor at GSD Harvard, and has been visiting professor at ETH Zurich and external examiner at the AA London and Greenwich University. Eelco Hooftman is member elect of the Royal Scottish Academy.

  • Bridget Baines

    Director

    Bridget Baines, co-founder and director of GROSS. MAX. graduated from Edinburgh College of Art. Bridget is the lead designer of numerous (international) competition winning designs and responsible for the strategic design and master planning of all major GROSS. MAX. projects. Her expertise is the design of public realm and urban design from concept to detailed resolution. Award winning public space projects by Bridget Baines in London include Windrush Square, Potters Field Park and Lyric Square. Recent experience in City of Edinburgh Planning applications include the Dunard Music Venue in the World Heritage Site with David Chipperfield Architects and also the masterplan for Edinburgh Park.

    Bridget has extensive experience in developing projects across all scales of design bringing a highly conceptual approach with vast technical expertise.

    Bridget has been lecturing in Denmark, France, Japan, China and USA.

    Between 2009 and 2015 Bridget was visiting professor at GSD Harvard.

  • David Richards

    Associate Director

    David Richards has been an employee since 2005, prior to joining GROSS. MAX. he worked for Kees Christiaanse Architects and Planners (KCAP), Rotterdam. David has extensive experience as lead landscape architect for a range of complex multidisciplinary projects including the Friargate Development in Coventry, Imperial College London, and Heathrow Expansion. He also has wide ranging experience with highly complex interdisciplinary design co-ordination incl. the delivery of major international projects with Zaha Hadid Architects and more recently as part of the design team for the masterplanning of Greenwich Peninsula London, as well as the New Museum of Transportation in Budapest and London Wall West, both in collaboration with Diller Scofidio + Renfro Architects. He has experience of working in close collaboration with client stakeholders incl. the development of the Landscape Master Plan and World Heritage Management Plan for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. David also currently works of a number public realm projects for public and private clients.

    David has lectured for Gross. Max. across the U.K. and Europe. He has also given lectures about Ascension Island, most notably at the Royal Geographical Society and has taught at various institutions including Harvard GSD, University of Edinburgh, Kingston University London.

  • Daniel Reiser

    Associate Director

    Daniel joined GROSS.MAX. again in 2002 after education in Germany, the UK and the USA, having already collaborated with the firm in 1998.

    He has worked on a wide range of projects, from large scale urban masterplans to small interventions in the UK as well as internationally.

    Being familiar with large and complex projects, he has coordinated and completed projects such as the BMW-factory in Leipzig / Germany, the Dongdaemun World Design Park in Seoul / South Korea, the King Abdullah Petroleum Research Centre in Riyadh / Saudi Arabia as well as several large mixed-use developments in the UK and Ireland.

    He has lead and coordinated the design team for the transformation of the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin into a public park.

    Current projects Include the open spaces for the National Collection Centre of the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, the refurbishment and extension of Paisley Museum, Eden Project Dundee, as well as public realm design and urban masterplans in the UAE and wider Middle East.

    He is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute and supervisor on the Pathway to Chartership.

    Daniel was studio tutor at Edinburgh College of Art and invited guest lecturer at Glasgow School of Art. He has lectured internationally on the work of GROSS.MAX.

  • Barbora Micovska

    Associate Director

    Graduated in architecture in France in 2009 and having worked in agencies that navigate between architecture and landscape, Barbora specializes in the design and development of public realm - ranging from masterplans to object design. During the 8 years spent practicing in France, Barbora was leading projects from inception to completion.

    Since Barbora joined GROSS.MAX. in 2015, she was in charge of the winning competition project of ‘Quartier Belvédère’, a new contemporary center in Bordeaux, which she carried out in collaboration with Dutch architects Güller - Güller. Barbora also worked on the development of Greenwich peninsula in London, on the Moscow Ring in Russia, on prestigious Avenue Montaigne courtyards in Paris as well as on Mercury House Square in Malta in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects.

    Recently Barbora was in charge of the competitive dialogue for the redevelopment of the Eiffel Tower area in Paris, a complex project on one of the most prestigious sites in the world. Barbora also led the winning competition for the design of Wembley Park in London.
